In the parable of the persistent widow, Luke tells us that Jesus is using the parable to teach the disciples: Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. (Luke 18:1) Do we understand persistence in prayer?
We live in an instant society – movies on demand, fast food, instant social communication, google the question, ask Siri. I’ve heard people upset because a text has still not been answered 10 minutes later.
Then we expect God to be like us. Our mistake.
Too often we only remember to pray when we need something. Truth is we grow more during times of trial then when we are on a comfortable path. When things are troubled we actively seek God, pray for direction, call out for strength. Why would God rush to fix things when we slide back into complacency after?
Faith is believing where we cannot see and trusting when we are not given instant gratification. Abraham and Sarah remained faithful even though they waited for an heir until they were in their nineties.
