Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. So watch yourselves. Luke 17:1-3
Things that trip us are bound to come. That is a scary thought in many ways. We really want to believe if we go to church, say our prayers and read our Bible that we are immune to trouble. We are not.
But the harsher warning from Jesus in this scripture applies not to our personal salvation but to our affect on others: trouble that comes through us. Have you ever encouraged someone to sin? It can be so subtle; our peer pressure to coerce people to act contrary to what they know is right in their hearts.
We usually push with words like what will it hurtor everyone is doing it. We gossip knowing it will spread or spew our anger to destroy another’s peace and serenity. If we are upset, we will make sure everyone around us is too. These actions are what Jesus is warning against. It would be better to be dead then pull someone into sin.
Is there a place in your life where you are stumbling? Have you tried to drag someone else down with you? Watch yourself.
