“Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” Luke 2:49
Every year Mary and Joseph went to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. The year that Jesus was 12, the caravan headed home, without him. For three anxious days, Mary and Joseph searched for him. When they found him, he was in the Temple.
Their worry brought his response above. How often do we search for Jesus forgetting the clearest place to find him is in his Father’s house? I’m not claiming you have to be in church to find Jesus – but why make it any more difficult on yourself if you are already anxious. Go to where you know he is.
In these days of Covid, in person isn’t always comfortable or safe. But we forget that the church is not a building. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them (Matthew 18:20). Too often at our times of greatest need we hide, stay away, thinking we need to face things alone. Jesus clearly tells us to join together.
So gather in church, at home, or on the phone. Gather with friends and with strangers. Gather in joy and in sorrow, always knowing where we can find our Lord.
